This month our Womble on the ground, Jason, visited Amelia and The Suffolk Beach Cleans.
Here’s what Jason found out…
Q. How long has your group been formed?
A. Just over a year! I am a dog walker and a marathon runner, so I spend a lot of time outside. I’ve always hated the litter and became more and more irritated by the litter being left on North Denes Beach. You have 2 choices – either complain or do something about it! I am also a member of a group that is sort of like Scouts/Guides for grown ups, we work towards challenges, badges and awards. This is what initially prompted me to run a few litter picks as community events – I thought no one would come at first, but they did. And it’s grown from there!
Q. How many regular volunteers do you have taking part?
A. It varies by location – anywhere from 4 to 24!
Q. What is the biggest problem your group faces?
A. Luckily, we haven’t encountered any big problems that I can think of!
Q. What is your proudest achievement as a group?
A. That there is significantly less litter on the beach! Especially the wilder North Denes end.
Q. What is the strangest thing your group has found during a clean up?
A. A pair of coconuts and a giant teddy bear!
Q. If you could give only 1 piece of advice to anyone thinking of becoming a Womble or setting up their own group what would it be?
A. In the words of Greta Thunberg, no one is too small to make a difference!
